Musical Director, Tuba
Paul Sidney Paul has been playing the Tuba for almost 40 years and doesn’t want to say how old he was when he actually started playing 😊 Over the years he has been a member of various orchestras and wind bands playing the Tuba, and until recently, Paul played with Filton Concert Brass, based in Bristol. Paul started conducting in 1998 and really enjoys being able to work with players to develop the comradeship and joy that comes from playing in a band. We are really fortunate to have him join the Portishead Town Band as our Music Director. Look out for him when we are next playing a gig locally. |

Secretary, Cornet/Trumpet
Anna Gent Anna started playing trumpet /cornet at a very young age whilst her Mum, Dilly Taylor, taught, played and conducted locally. She took to the cornet and spent many years with the Clevedon Brass junior band under her Mum's baton then senior band, under Steve Tripp, settling as repiano cornet and even playing bass for a time whilst sporting some particularly attractive train-track braces. Unfortunately university, living abroad, a (brief) career in insurance and then a much more long term career in teaching, plus having two beautiful baby boys, all got in the way of brass band playing for some 15 years. In the summer of 2014 Anna finally summoned the courage up to dust off (literally) her cornet and join the ranks of Portishead Town Band. She is now thoroughly enjoying the social and musical benefits, and despite usually arriving at rehearsal covered in toddler debris and since January 2016 a fresh batch of baby vomit, is also enjoying being part of the committee and acting as Secretary too. |
Euphonium (Till we get a better offer)
Nigel Woods Nigel came to brass banding in the early 70s having been introduced by his father, who himself came from a family of brass banders. Nigel was then taught by the renowned teacher Chris Mallet and during the mid 70s was selected along with other local youngers including Bold as Brasses Phil "Pongo” Jones to join The Somerset Youth Wind Band on euphonium, During his schools years Nigel was a member of Portishead Concert band which was conducted by his father whose members included both of his sisters, brother and grandfather. During this period Nigel also learned to play the saxophone (poorly). However, his love of football, beer and commitment to work resulted in a long sabbatical from music until the 90s when he again joined his father with Bristol Victoria Brass Band. During a number of years he filled in many gaps in the band including periods on Eb bass, tenor horn, euphonium and finally trombone. Unfortunately in the mid 2000s the Victoria band folded and the instruments returned to the loft. However, In January 2013 responding to a request to help rebuild Portishead Town Band he dusted off his trombone and spent the first year playing 2nd trombone. In the absence of anyone else Nigel is now our Euphonium player. |
